Mainstays in the Justice League International era, Fire and Ice are back for a brand new mini-series from DC Comics.
Oh, I get it
While Fire and Ice are still probably best known from the Justice League International era, they’re making quite the comeback in the modern age. The heroines are back in the League, and also wrapped up a mini-series event that saw them head to Smallville.
They’re not done yet though, as DC has revealed fans can get ready for more ‘solo’ adventures with the pair. From writer Joanne Starer and artist Stephen Byrne, a fresh six issue mini-series, following up on DC’s Absolute Power and the DC All In Special is on the way.
This new title looks to be setting up an adventure in even higher-strangeness too. While Absolute Power might’ve seen the two heroes get their powers switched, Fire & Ice: When Hell Freezes Over will take it one step further.
It’s freaky Friday, DC style
“Fire and Ice’s last series, Welcome to Smallville, really focused on the ladies figuring out how their friendship worked when they weren’t saving the world,” said Starer, “and of course there was a lot of conflict that came with that. With this new series, I wanted to showcase how well Bea and Tora understand each other and how strong they are when they work together.”
With their powers switched and no solution in sight, Fire and Ice tuck tail and regroup in Smallville, where they realize their predicament makes them something worse than has-been heroes: menaces to the local community they’ve come to love. But Fire’s always got a plan, no matter how shortsighted! And when she goes digging around in Zatanna’s bag of tricks for a quick fix in the middle of karaoke night…what could possibly go wrong? Aside from, y’know, everything. Again.
“The girls accidentally swap bodies in an attempt to correct the power mix-up that happened during Absolute Power,” continued Starer. “This Freaky Friday situation might be confusing if not for the brilliant art of Stephen Byrne. He’s created incredibly fun and distinct new character designs that make it VERY clear when Ice is in Fire’s body and vice-versa. The body-swap chaos is going to be a ton of fun for readers, but not for Bea and Tora.”
“As it turns out, the only way to get their original bodies back is to hunt down a mystical artifact in Hell,”concluded Starer. “So, naturally, I’m having them literally fight their way through Hell, side by side. While no prior knowledge is required to pick up the series, our old-school Justice League International fans will remember that Fire and Ice have been to Hell before—so a return trip is extra risky. But these two are willing to gamble it all for each other.”
