SDCC ’24: Comic Con panel reveals the first full look at Hellboy: The Crooked Man

Billed as “the actual first horror film in the Hellboy Franchise”, The Crooked Man is looking good, and definitely feels different.

Oh Hell

Yes, it’s another Hellboy movie just a few years after we had a reboot for the property. But don’t tune out, because especially if you’re a fan of the supernatural hero, there’s good reason to be optimistic about this particular film.

For us, the biggest reason has nothing to do with the cast or story, but instead that Hellboy: The Crooked Man looks to be a fairly straight-up horror movie. No don’t get the wrong idea, because there definitely looks like there’s action to be had, but there could be some actual scares this time around too, and that’s a very cool thing.

Creator Mike Mignola was on hand at SDCC this past weekend for the big reveal of the first full Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer. That’s fitting too, since SDCC was the first appearance of Hellboy in any form, going way back to 1994 and Seed of Evil.

So to see Mignola reintroduce him to film audiences at the same event is particularly cool. Not that he was alone in doing that at the big Con, as MIgnola was joined by Hellboy actor Jack Kesy (Deadpool 2), plus Jefferson White (‘Yellowstone’), Adeline Rudolph (‘Resident Evil’), and director Brian Taylor (Crank).

The panel showcased a take on the hero that seems to have plenty of the character’s staple themes in play, but an overall grim tone that we just haven’t seen before on film. As we mentioned above, the panel noted that this will be “the actual first horror film in the Hellboy Franchise”, which seems crazy to say, but it’s also kinda true.

Here’s the first look at Hellboy: The Crooked Man

So what did you think? We’re pretty into it, and we haven’t felt that way about a Hellboy movie since the original duology. Granted, this is the first look at the movie in action, but what’s shown is tough to find fault with. There are so few comic book-based movies these days that have a darker tone too, that seeing something completely different is just great.

Will the actual movie be as great? That remains to be seen, but we’re holding out some hope. From Ketchup Entertainment, the rated ‘R’ Hellboy: The Crooked Man will see release some time later this year.
