From the Ashes of Krakoa, comes a brand new X-Force

The hard-hitting X-Force team is back, rising from the collapse of the mutant nation Krakoa, with another completely new roster.

Forge-ing a new team

Right on the heels of a teaser for a new X-Force book, Marvel Comics has unveiled a brand new team that’ll be taking on the iconic name. Long time fans should not expect to see any original members of the Force to be included though, through there are a few that have been on the Force before.

Written by Geoffrey Thorne and with art from Marcus To, the new X-Force will have Forge as its commander, and will otherwise star a mix of classic and modern mutants. Building out that list will be Rachel Summers, Betsy Braddock, Sage, Surge, and Tank, but this team will also have a rotating catalog of guest stars. Forge will reportedly bring in specialists for each mission, with Deadpool leading the way in issue #1.

If that sounds like a lot of ‘new’ to you, then strap in, because the tone is going to be decidedly different than pretty much any other X-Force title as well. According to Thorne, this one’s going to be “fun”.

A NEW PATH FORGED! The world is fractured. Forge uses his powers to devise the only fix: an all-new, all-different X-FORCE! Forge leads a custom-made, handpicked team of mutants in off-the-books missions so dire, so integral to the fate of the Marvel Universe, there’s no time to stop for permission! Plus, as Forge detects increasing threats across the planet, he’ll recruit specialists for each target. It’s a revolving door of Marvel guest stars and first up: that regenerating degenerate, DEADPOOL

“I cannot believe the reaction to my pitch with, ‘That sounds like X-Force to us,’” Thorne shared. “It’s a new vibe and a different mission, but it’s still X-Force. Looking at all the books coming out under this banner, I’ll just paraphrase the prophet, Sheryl Crow, ‘All I wanna do is have some fun,’ and looking at what I’m getting to do and what the others are bringing, I’m absolutely not the only one.”

“When Marvel approached me to be the artist for X-FORCE, I was ecstatic,” To added. “I was always a big fan of the X-books growing up, and to be a part of bringing that excitement to new and old readers alike was an opportunity I could not turn down. And the chance to draw Betsy Braddock again is icing on the cake!”

Marvel Comics press release

It’s a lot of reinvention for X-Force, though a kick in the pants might be just what the long-running team needs. The book will join the lineup of titles in the “From the Ashes” era this July, alongside Phoenix and Nyx. Don’t forget though, this new X-reinvention starts with the flagships, which include Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men, Gail Simone and David Marquez’ Uncanny X-Men, and Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men.

X-Force #1 hits the stands on July 31st, 2024.
