A name that pretty much everybody knows, War of the Worlds is about to get a frozen makeover, in the frigid north of Russia.
Striders!
We’ve seen a bunch of War of the Worlds remakes and reboots over the years, but few as interesting-sounding as what 1C Game Studio has planned. While that studio’s name might be best known for strategy, War of the Worlds will be an action/adventure title, and one that brings the legendary Martian invasion to the frozen wilds of Siberia.
It’s an idea that’s apparently been in the works since 2005, hailing from author (and the game’s script-writer) Sergei “SerB” Burkatovskiy. In this expansion of the original tale, Russia is very much under the thumb (or whatever) of the aliens, as surviving humans make for the wild.
And in the case of the nation in question, that’s a very, very cold place.
In an alternate 1896, Earth was the target of a massive Martian invasion. The War of the Worlds: Siberiatakes place in Russia, where several characters attempt to save themselves by fleeing panic-stricken Petrograd and head for the eastern end of the Russian Empire.

Not any gameplay there, we know, but this dramatic live-action teaser does set the stage nicely for what players will be up against. From the looks of it, not only will they have to contend with Martians, but wildlife and the weather as well. Add to that what sounds like political fallout with a nation that was already in turmoil, and you have quite a set of challenges.
“We’ve always dreamed about making a ‘What if?’ kind of game,” explains 1C Game Studios director Albert Zhiltsov. “What if the invasion wasn’t limited to Victorian Britain and instead took place all over the world? We wanted to include Russia in that story. During that period, the country was a powerful empire, plagued by internal struggles. An alien invasion is a historical trigger, much like the revolution of 1917: all the issues accumulated over the years spill out all at once.”

Promising loads of 19th century weapons to wield, and stealth and “spatial” puzzle elements, and an “intricate story” and characters, The War of the Worlds: Siberia is going to be a title to watch.
