True Crime trademark abandoned, sequel just about dead

Bad news if you were waiting on a ‘true’ sequel to True Crime. Activision’s crime action epic is finally just about dead. The company has officially let the trademark on the name expire and doesn’t look to have any interest in picking it up any time soon.

If you remember, the sleeper (sorry) hit that was Sleeping Dogs was originally set to be a game in the series that bore the True Crime name, but inexplicably was changed to stand on its own during development, much to the chagrin of fans. And if you were one of those fans hoping that someday a real sequel would be announced, well, you can stop hoping now. IGN is reporting that on this past December the 19th, the mark was “abandoned” by Activision as a US federal trademark, which makes the case pretty much closed at present.

Of course, theres always the chance that another publisher could nab the name for a totally new series, or one that is a kind of spiritual successor. For now though, that’s all she wrote for True Crime.
