Watch for Flying Batteries, here’s a new look at Sonic Mania

Sega’s Sonic Mania shows off its Flying Battery Zone, and Knuckles the Echidna, in this latest gameplay trailer.

Gotta go fast

All that, and no lock-on technology in sight. While it’s been a while since we’ve seen classic Sonic action, it’s been way longer since we’ve seen Knuckles. The echidna hasn’t really done anything of note in a long time. Well, as far as core Sonic titles go anyway. It’s pretty awesome to see him here in all his wall-climbing glory.

Of course, everything is old school in Sonic Mania, and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t know why Sega decided side-scrolling platformers weren’t good enough for the franchise, but I’m glad they’re past it. Because really, Sonic Mania looks pretty fantastic.

Sonic Mania is the ultimate celebration of past and future, blending Genesis-era Sonic platforming with New Zones, Powerful Bosses, and three Playable Characters, all presented at a gorgeous 60 FPS. In the span of 25 years, Sonic has collected countless rings across various Zones, and Sonic Mania revisits what it was that first made Sonic great, giving old and new fans alike an experience that will leave them smiling.

There’s plenty more to come in terms of advanced looks I’m sure, but it isn’t all that long till the game finally hits retail. Xbox One, PS4, PC and -yes- Switch owners, will all get to indulge in going a little too fast when Sonic Mania arrives this Summer.
