The Super Mario Galaxy movie warps to IMAX

The Mushroom Kingdom is heading back to IMAX theaters, when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives for the format in April.

Super Mario returns

Here’s some fitting news, considering that today is MAR10. The 2026 edition of Nintendo’s yearly Mario celebration has produced a few tidbits for fans to chew on, including the fact that the upcoming sequel film is heading to IMAX theaters.

While that fact was probably something of a foregone conclusion, it’s also nice to see the confirmation. That’s not all that’s arrived though, as the final trailer for the film has been released as well. In it, fans can check out a hint at the star-faring adventure itself, and quite a bit more.

Yes, that includes some brand new adaptations of a few key characters. And some of those are actual surprises. New arrivals for the movie series include Rosalina, Bowser jr., and in a total surprise move, Wart. We haven’t seen that big frog featured in anything since the halcyon days of Super Mario Bros 2, so it’s pretty great to see him in this sequel.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., and follows The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score.
