Gamescom ’25: LEGO Batman returns, in Legacy of the Dark Knight

There is a lot going on in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a game that will span an amalgam of the title hero’s adventures.

Welcome to the LEGO asylum

As we said above, there’s a lot gong on in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Revealed this week at Gamescom, the title hailing from Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC, and the LEGO Group will include a smattering of Batman’s movie adventures. But these won’t be disparate stories, as all of them look to be brought together to tell one cohesive tale.

Open-world in configuration, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will allow players to make their way around Gotham city as they see fit. According to the press release, that’s going to include everything that you’d assume. Players can grapple between buildings, glide across the rooftops, and even make use of “a range of Batmobiles and Batcycles”. From the trailer that you’re about to see, that might include some big fan-faves too, complete with the Tumbler.

As for combat, Batman will battle his foes with “fluid attack chains, counters, and over-the-top takedowns”. It’s a fighting style that definitely looks familiar, and we absolutely mean that in a good way. Since you’re probably wondering, no, he won’t have to go it alone either. Hey, this is a LEGO game after all.

Two player action will bring in the likes of Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and even Talia al Ghul. Each one of those side-characters will have their own special equipment as well, like “Jim Gordon’s foam sprayer, Robin’s line launcher, and Catwoman’s whip”. Hmm, “foam sprayer”…

From what’s been revealed, the heroes might need all of that gear and more. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will serve up a trio of difficulty options, plus a roster of villains that includes “The Joker, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and more”.

A whole world of the Dark Knight

The adventure begins with the origins of Batman as a young Bruce Wayne trains with The League of Shadows, and throughout the story-led campaign, players will build a family of allies with well-known characters including Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul to help confront an ever-growing threat from a Rogues Gallery of DC Super-Villains, facing the likes of The Joker, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and more.

With a dynamic new LEGO Batman combat system that encapsulates the Caped Crusader’s distinctive fighting style, every hit packs a punch, with fluid attack chains, counters, and over-the-top takedowns. Whether playing as Batman solo or in the two-player local cooperative mode, players can use iconic Bat-gadgets such as Batarangs to distract or stun enemies and the Batclaw to reel them in. Partner characters have their own signature gear, including Jim Gordon’s foam sprayer, Robin’s line launcher, and Catwoman’s whip, providing a variety of options to approach every enemy encounter and boss battle. For those looking for a tougher playthrough, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knightgoes beyond the familiar LEGO game experience with the new Caped Crusader enhanced difficulty setting and an even more challenging Dark Knight difficulty level.

Warner Bros. Games press release

Stay tuned Bat-fans, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is coming up some time in 2026. Look for it on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
