Frogwares working on more than just the sequel, reveals remaster of original The Sinking City

Currently in Kickstarter, and cleaning up, is The Sinking City 2. But there’s more eldritch horror coming, with a remaster of the original.

Blub

Released in 2019, Frogwares’ The Sinking City was a fresh take on traditional Lovecraftian terror. The game sent players into a semi-submerged northeastern US town, filled with people who were mysteriously drawn to it, an assortment of monsters, and a collection of freakish humanoids who could be ally or enemy. Unlike some games in the mold too, The Sinking City actually put some hardware in the hands of players, who could blast and smash away at unknowable creeps from the depths.

The game was fairly well received, and just recently a sequel hit Kickstarter. It’s anything but sunk too, with the upcoming game sitting at over 400% funded on the platform as you read this. But as we just learned, it’s also not all that Frogwares has been up to.

While the sequel is its own thing, the developer apparently also has a remaster of that original title coming. And from the first batch of screenshots, it’s looking spectacular.

According to the company, The Sinking City Remaster will serve up a host of improvements over the original including:

  • Game fully relit in Unreal Engine 5
  • Enhanced locations with additional levels of detail and objects
  • 4K textures and improved reflections
  • Addition of a Photo Mode
  • Support for DLSS, FSR and TSR upscaling

Frogwares press release

While that remaster is looking great so far, owners of the original game won’t have to pay to dive in. Frogwares says that everyone who has a copy of the original The Sinking City for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S will be able to download the updated version for free. How’s that for cool?
