Dive into Dragonkin: The Banished’s “Ancestral Grid” in new video

Eko Software and NACON’s hack ‘n’ slash Dragonkin: The Banished continues to look pretty great in its newest trailer.

Don’t call it a skill tree

Kind of drifting under the radar is one of the most promising action RPGs that we’ve seen recently, in Eko Software and NACON’s Dragonkin: The Banished. A fantasy-fueled title, Dragonkin tasks players with fielding one of three classes, as they battle hordes of monsters in what appears to be a gorgeously detailed world.

The game is coming up fast now, with a March launch on tap, and so publisher NACON is ramping up the hype. We’ve so far seen a deeper dive into the classes mentioned above, and now we’ve got a detailed look at the Ancestral Grid.

More than just a skill tree, according to the press release, the Ancestral Grid is an evolving interface that allows for upgrades via a kind of puzzle system.

Dragonkin: The Banished’s skill system is based on the Ancestral Grid, an interface that evolves with the character. Each class has its own Grid, which expands as players gain levels. On this Grid are placed Fragments, hexagonal pieces of loot containing skills or modifiers. By aligning these Fragments, players customize their playstyle: skills are added to the character’s skill bar, while modifiers boost the effectiveness of skills they are in contact with.

More than just a skill tree, the Ancestral Grid functions like a puzzle. As players progress through the game, they obtain increasingly powerful and complex Fragments.

The adventure is also enriched by a unique companion: your dragonet. This young, trained dragon adds an extra strategic dimension by having its own place in the Grid and triggering special effects.

NACON press release

We’re really digging what we’ve seen so far from Dragonkin: The Banished. If you are too, then you’ll be happy to know that the title is coming up on its early access launch very soon. Look for that to land on Steam on March 6th.

There won’t be an early access launch on consoles, though the final title will indeed be multiplatform. Just when that’s going to be though, there’s been no announcement just yet.
