Bungie brings back Marathon (for some multiplayer) and Nathan Fillion, for some Destiny 2

A classic FPS returns for a new form-factor and Destiny 2 gets a familiar voice, as both Marathon and actor Nathan Fillion are coming back.

Interesting turns

It’s probably pretty safe to assume that nobody was banking on a Marathon revival, and yet here we are. But while the name and universe is back, this isn’t the Marathon that FPS fans remember from the 90s. That’s because Bungie is bringing the label back as a player v player, multiplayer game.

That’s the basic gist anyway, though Marathon will have players doing more than just blasting each other. The game will also present hidden alien artifacts to find, and collectible weaponry and gear to add to your arsenal.

The following is non-gameplay footage:

A PvP-focused extraction shooter set on the mysterious planet of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon will see players inhabit the bodies of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries who have been designed to survive the planet’s harsh environments, exploring the lost colony that once inhabited Tau Ceti’s surface. Players will engage solo or in crews of three, searching for mysterious alien artifacts, as well as for valuable loot and new weapons and gear that they can add to their collection.

Bungie press release

Marathon is currently in active development for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While there’s no release date announced just yet, we do know that it’ll have full cross save and cross play.

It’s your Destiny

On the flip side from a property that’s been dormant for ages, is Destiny 2. Still uber popular and seeing regular updates, Bungie’s modern epic is constantly evolving… and maybe de-volving a lil’ bit too.

Yes, although Cade-6 ‘died’ in the game’s overall story a while ago, actor Nathan Fillion will be back to reprise his role as the android, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be any kind of flashback. How ever he’s returning, it’ll come by way of The Final Shape, which will be one mammoth expansion for Destiny 2.

The Final Shape will bring the decade-long Light and Darkness Saga to a close, and presumably lead into something new. All of that is just speculation right now though, as Bungie isn’t talking until the Destiny Showcase, which’ll be August 22nd.

Here’s a tease:

“This is a momentous time for Bungie, as we continue our evolution into a multi-game studio,” said Bungie CEO Pete Parsons. “More than thirty years of passion for creating incredible games has led us here and will push us into the future. We have a tremendous amount of work ahead, including continuing to build our Marathon development team and supporting Destiny for years to come. With our partners at PlayStation, we’re working to make our bold vision of Bungie as a true entertainment company a reality, while never forgetting our core mission: building worlds that inspire friendship.”
