Craft your own dungeon-crawl with Super Dungeon Maker

Ever wanted to make your own Zelda-type adventure? It’s pretty likely you have, and that might mean that you’d dig what Super Dungeon Maker has cooking.

While Nintendo hems and haws over a ‘Zelda-maker’, dev Firechick has actually gone and done it. The independent developer has basically brought the idea that birthed Super Mario Maker, and melded that with a cartoony fantasy aesthetic that gamers know and love.

And quite frankly, it’s looking fantastic.

In Super Dungeon Maker, you will design and create your very own pixel art-style dungeons of varying themes and difficulties, then share them with the community. Creativity knows no bounds here, as you can use as many levels, enemies, items, and bosses in your dungeon creations as you wish. Once you’ve hit a “creative block” worry not — you can play a near-infinite number of imaginative, clever dungeons made by other creators from all over the world while leveraging competitive statistics like World Record Time and Completion Rates.

As you can see, there are a ton of elements that should be very familiar to the Nintendo-faithful. Yes, the character is a chicken, but other than that, the mechanics at play, and the looks of the dungeons, are as Zelda-like as you can get.

While the game doesn’t support a custom story, the adventures you can make look to be pretty in-depth.

• DM Extraordinaire: In the dungeon, your creative prowess is limitless; place as many enemies, floors, secret paths, perilous traps, special items, and hidden objects as your heart desires. Just remember: the reward makes it worthwhile, but the challenge is what keeps them coming back.

Super Dungeon Maker will be available on February 15th, in Early Access form on Steam. The full experience will launch on the PC some time later this year, along with a Nintendo Switch edition.
