The Mummy lives!
Taking the wraps off a reboot
The Mummy looks like it might pretty nicely reboot a classic movie monster/villain. And it most definitely has those big set pieces and massive SFX moments that fans will be looking for. Of course, it’s got a pretty darn solid cast too, headlined by Tom Cruise. And you better believe he still brings some massive star-power to just about everything he’s in.
But still, the question remains: will this be the start of the Universal Pictures ‘shared’ monster universe? Honestly? It’s kind of hard to tell. With one false start already (Dracula Untold), your guess is as good as mine if there’s a possibility for anytime more, other than a ‘Mummy 2’ I mean.. I will say though, that this certainly feels like something that’s meant to kick-start something bigger. It just kind of has that epic feel to it.
With the huge level of destruction seen here, a horror/monsters universe could tell a story that’s radically different than anything out there too. That’s a very good thing, as all we’re looking at now is DC and Marvel. And while I have a soft spot for both, they’re both superhero universes. Universal’s possible creation would offer something fresh. Always a good thing.
Let’s hope there are some very cool things in store for some of the oldest characters in film. The Mummy hits theaters this coming Summer.
