Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer debuts, looks suitably awesome

Originally scheduled to debut with this coming week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, the Age of Ultron trailer has made its official debut a little not he early side thanks to a leak the day before.

Lots to like in there if you’re a Marvel fan. LOTS. I think Ultron is one of the dullest and most boring villains in all of comics too, and even I liked it. The Hulkbuster Iron Man suit, the new looks for some of the characters, the incredible animation and voice work on the main bot himself, and that darker tone and feel- all fantastic. Even with all the win though, there were a few little things that bugged me all the same.

For starters, it’s looking like Avengers 2 will be the Tony Stark show, with the character once again taking up most of center stage. I like both the film depiction of Tony and actor Robert Downey Jr a heck of a lot, so it’s not really the spotlighting that bothers me, it’s the fact that it seems like he’s the one that ‘creates’ Ultron in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s sort of comic book nitpicking here, but I think it’s way more interesting to have had Hank Pym (Ant Man) set as Ultron’s daddy, the same way it’s set up in the comics… not to mention that it would have been completely faithful to the source material and pretty darn easy to do as well. Don’t forget that Ant Man is hitting theaters right after Avengers (July 2015), and an Avengers 2 intro for Hank could have been a nice little intro for him into the MCU. Of course, Ultron’s origin could be two-part also, with Hank developing him in the past and then Tony reactivating him in the present, we’ll have to wait till this Summer to find out.

Marvel fans also have to be disappointed on some level that, although confirmed for the movie (as a physical representation of Paul Bettany’s J.A.R.V.I.S.) The Vision wasn’t seen at all in the trailer. Vision is a longstanding Avenger, who’s almost as classically a part of the team as the main players that we’ve seen in the movies so far, so to finally see him on the silver screen is going to be a treat. Although his absence is very understandable, as they have to save something for further down the road, it’s also definitely a bit of a bummer.

Still though, as first trailers go, this one was very nice indeed and only further cranks on the hype machine for the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, which hits theaters on May 1st, 2015.
