Every real gamers favourite developers, Valve, have announced their Linux-based operating system SteamOS.
Valve’s free operating system (Yes, that’s right, it’s free) is designed to bring the luxuries of PC gaming to the living room and will also be made available to manufacturers looking to release their own gaming hardware.
A message from Steam’s website states the following “As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.”
This is one of three announcements due this week in what valve state as the “future” of gaming. One of the other highly anticipated announcement they are expected to make is for their new Steam Box hardware which will utilize SteamOS. In a market dominated by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, nothing would bring me more satisfaction than seeing a new kid on the block (Yes, I know Valve have been around for ages) put their noses out of joint.
