DC bringing Wildcats back once again

DC Comics is bringing Jim Lee’s Wildcats back once again, this time as a six issue mini-series with Warren Ellis attached as writer.

From the pages of THE WILD STORM, the piratical covert team are here to stop humanity from destroying itself. The black-ops team featuring Grifter, Savant, John Colt and Adrianna Tereshkova have discovered that the secret space program Skywatch has been performing medical experiments on abducted innocents for decades. And now one of those experiments is about to explode—revealing a new threat and level of danger that no one could have prepared for. The covert team may have thought the world was strange before, but they had no idea—and now the stakes might just be too high.

Wild again

It might be just me, but it feels like DC has brought Wildcats back a few times already. Formerly an Image affiliated property, Wildcats came to DC and was integrated into the DCU with the arrival of creator Jim Lee.

A publisher at DC, Lee’s superheroes were a fairly big element in the New 52 era of DC, before fading away for a while. They returned with a series that saw 24 issues hit stands before folding, with Jon Davis-Hunt and none other than Warren Ellis as the creative team.

Now Ellis is back with the Cats once again, this time working along side artist Ramon Villalobos. And they’re apparently packing this new mini-series with plenty of good old fashioned action.

“The first line I wrote down for WILDCATS was: ‘Saving the human race from the human race,’” says Ellis.  “It’s a team made up of people who have seen the worst in everybody and everything, and yet still put themselves in frankly absurd amounts of jeopardy just so tomorrow might be a little bit better. And it’s a short series, so I might just kill them all. Come and see what happens. The art is great.”

While the art does look pretty great, it’s not clear if this new title is once again a part of the DC Universe. There’s nothing saying that it’s not, but it feels like it might be its own thing.

We’ll see I guess. Wildcats #1 hits stands on August 28th.

About Jason Micciche

Jason's been knee deep in videogames since he was but a lad. Cutting his teeth on the pixely glory that was the Atari 2600, he's been hack'n'slashing and shoot'em'uping ever since. Mainly an FPS and action guy, Jason enjoys the occasional well crafted title from every genre.
