Nintendo Download: Climb the Crystal Mountain

A slow week for the Nintendo family of consoles sees Celeste (and a few others) hitting the Switch, and the 3DS-Virtual Console launch of Pokemon Crystal.

Climbing the crystal mountains

Not a ton again this week. It is still January, so that’s more than acceptable. If you’re dying for something new though, this week isn’t really going to do it for you. I’m pretty sure anyway.

That might come from not having any idea what Celeste is. But from the sound of it, it might be an acquired taste. Apparently, it’s a “super-tight platformer”. For me that recalls memories of Super Meat Boy. Not that the latter game isn’t popular (cause it is), but that’s a big “no thanks” as far as I’m concerned.

As for what else there might be this week, there’s Strikers 1945 II, also for the Switch. Far and away though, the 3DS gets the best release this week with Pokemon Crystal for the Virtual Console.

Kinda makes you think, right? I mean, maybe the Switch should have a Virtual Console. I’m sure nobody wants that though.

Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch

  • Celeste – Brave hundreds of hand-crafted challenges in this super-tight platformer, as you help Madeline survive her journey to the top of Celeste Mountain. The controls are simple and accessible, but with layers of expressive depth to master, and every death is a lesson. Lightning-fast respawns keep you climbing as you uncover the mysteries of the mountain and brave its many perils.

Virtual Console for Nintendo 3DS

  • Pokémon Crystal Version – Originally released for the Game Boy Color system in 2000, the Pokémon Crystal game added several new features to the Pokémon franchise. For the first time, players could choose a female or male character, and Pokémon battles featured animation. And now, this game is available in 2D via the Virtual Console service and invites you to explore the Johto region again—or for the first time. The Pokémon Crystal Version game launches on Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. PT.
