Marvel is going to have two Captain America’s as of May, 2016. They’re going to need them too, with Hydra resurgent and the Red Skull on the loose.
“The country is as divided as it’s ever been, and Steve is one of a kind,” says Nick Spencer, in an interview with Marvel.com. “He’s a unifying figure, someone we can all look up to, [and] someone we can all put our faith in. It’s no secret the Marvel Universe is about to enter a period of serious conflict with Civil War II looming on the horizon, and as such, it feels like the perfect moment to bring Steve back into fighting shape.”
The perfect time indeed, with a story that calls for Steve to get his super-soldier-strength back and finally pick up the shied again, a legion of fans who never stopped looking forward to his return, and a big-budget motion picture in theaters with Captain America: Civil War. Kind of a perfect storm there.
Robbed of his strength and youth by the Red Skull last year, Steve has recently returned and is back to his old self. Also back to his old self? The aforementioned Skull, who’s got a re-firged Hydra under his command. And they’re back in a major way in the Marvel U, having wormed their way into every corner of the Universe.
“Anyone can be a threat. Trust no one. Even a restored Captain America may not be enough to stop the far reaching tentacles of Hydra.” Yeah, we’ll see about that one. Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 hits the racks and digital download storefronts on May 25th, from the team of Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz.
