E3 2014: Nintendo’s S.T.E.A.M finally gets revealed

The mysterious new 3DS IP finally gets some daylight shed on it. The title is a turn based strategy game, done in a comic book style.

It takes place in a fictional London, where all technology is steam based; in other words, a steam punk themed game. If you think about it, it’s perfect for Intelligent Systems, as they’re very much used to working with strategy games and RPGs. This is their specialty, and they’ve been doing a wonderful job over the past few decades. You use the steam in your steam gauge to move around and perform actions; the battles take place on a large three dimensional field, but the movement is grid based. You switch between different viewpoints of multiple characters on the battle field, trying to get a sense of what’s going on in the battle. It’s a different take on a strategy game, as it’s not done in a top down view.

Think of it somewhat like the Valkyria Chronicles games, only this game puts a lot of importance on vertical viewpoints. Climbing up to a high place and getting a good look at the battle field is quite important. A Nintendo Treehouse perspective on S.T.E.A.M will be happening later on today, so be on the look out for more footage and talk about this title.

About Christopher Deleanides

Well, my name's Christopher Deleanides as you all know and I'm the Nintendo Editor here at BG. I've been playing video games since 1992, and I've been a Nintendo fan the entirety of those years. My love for video games as well as Nintendo hasn't changed, and probably never will. The only thing that comes close is politics, as I'm very deeply involved in both local and international issues.
