Asymmetrical horror title Halloween is set to show off its first fear-inducing map. Take a look at Haddonfield Heights.
The Shape of Halloween
If you missed the news, there’s a new asymmetrical horror game coming up, pitting survivors against a solo slasher. And yes, this one’s based on the legendary Halloween franchise, bringing Michael Meyers back to video games for the first time in a while.
The game looks beautifully detailed, and will feature both solo and multiplayer modes, hailing from developer and publisher Illfonic (co-published by Gun Interactive). You might know that name from Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, a title that was in very much the same vein.
We loved it upon release, and in the years afterwards, it dug shockingly deep into that property’s lore. It’s till worth checking out, if you’re a big fan of the boys in gray. With that in mind too, you might want to keep an eye on Halloween.
And speaking of, we’ve got a first-look at a map for you to see today. In the fresh trailer, Illfonic shows off the dark and foreboding Haddonfield Heights. From the sound of it too, there are some interesting twists on the genre planned, in terms of gameplay.
No safe place
How does a title with a singular foe work in solo play? We could see multiplayer, as the killer knocks off characters one by one, until they’re either all eliminated, or he is. Don’t worry too much about it though, as it sounds like Illfonic has some neat ideas in play.
For one thing, Michael Myers will be able to use something called Shape Jump in Halloween. This will allow him to move from place to place in an almost supernatural manner, unseen and stealthily. As for the survivor(s), play is obviously opposed to the villain, as they make their way through the formerly idilic town.
If playing as a civilian, fans will have to battle Myers while completing a number of other tasks. According to the developer, play will focus on having to “scavenge for supplies, guide residents to safety, and locate a phone to call the police before the time runs out”. So with that, you get a good sense as to how the title will actually play out.
And as for that look at it in action, here we go:
“This neighborhood allowed us to reimage the tension of Haddonfield in a way that feels both intimate and terrifying,” said Jordan Mathewson, Design Director at IllFonic. “We wanted players to feel the comfort of the neighborhood they recognize from the film right before we turn it into panic. Every hedge, hallway, and backyard was built to heighten suspense and reward clever play, whether you’re hunting or being hunted.”
Illfonic press release
From the aforementioned, and in partnership with Compass International Pictures and Further Front, Halloween is targeting a September 8th, 2026 launch. Just in time for its title holiday then.
