The Thief series hits virtual reality later this year with Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. And the first deep dive into gameplay has arrived.
An up close and personal Thief
A legendary series of games, Thief has been around since its first installment launched back in 1998. And while there have been multiple sequels since then, every incarnation of it has some things in common. Sneaking, thievery, and limited combat opportunities are all constants, as is protagonist Garrett. In Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow though, that last note will vary a bit.
Vertigo Games takes over the reigns for this latest title, in collaboration with Maze Theory and Eidos-Montréal. And while Garrett is present for what’ll be the series’ first virtual reality foray, he will be no more than accompaniment.
How’s that? Well, the master thief will interact with his fantasy world via his mechanical eye. That’s an item that was once in his head, though it now appears that it somehow holds his mind. It’s also not his anymore, and is now held by a street level crook named Magpie.
An original character for the line, Magpie isn’t quite the criminal that Garrett is (was?). She’s also not the only new element present, as the VR format opens the game up for some interesting mechanics and twists on what’s come before.
Diving into the shadows
To show players a bit more about the game, host Dan Maher kicks things off from London, England. From there, it’s on to Vertigo Games’ Principal Game Designer Nick Witsel, for a deeper look at gameplay. And as mentioned above, there’s quite a bit that’s new or altered from what you might know.
The City is a place of shadows, ruled by the tyrant Baron Ulysses Northcrest. You are Magpie, a cunning thief shaped by the streets, who steals as the only means to survive until uncovering something greater: a legendary artifact holding a legacy from the past.
Experience the world of Thief for the first time in VR, blending classic stealth gameplay with next-gen immersion. Use your body to sneak past guards and your hands to pickpocket, pry open hidden compartments, and bypass locks through tactile interactions. Wield an array of arrows and tools to distract, disable, or eliminate threats with immersive VR archery as you climb rooftops, sneak through back alleys, and uncover secrets in a dark, steampunk-inspired world. Every heist offers multiple paths and playstyles, whether you sneak past guards unseen or take them down from the shadows.
Vertigo Games press release
There’s no release date just yet for Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, but you can expect to see it arrive for headsets some time later this year.
