It’s been more than 20 years, but Streets of Rage is back. And from the latest look at the gameplay, the classic beat ’em up is back in fine form.
Bare knuckle
Axel and Blaze, the most iconic SoR characters, once again take center stage in what is the first Streets of Rage title in years. Actually, believe it or not, Streets of Rage 3 released in 1994. I kind of don’t believe that, but there it is.
Anyway, here in this first real trailer for the new game, we get a good look at both fighters in action. That includes pulling off some cool new combos, like air-juggling foes.
Now that is looking good. Complete with totally overhauled visuals and an animated style, Streets of Rage 4 look to combine what made the series a favorite on the Genesis with all new elements.
So SoR4 is going to feel familiar… but different. Dotemu is taking over from Sega as publisher, and developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games have come on board.
They have some experience with revamping classics too, thanks to 2017’s Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake. If you liked that, Streets of Rage 4’s is the same team.
The game is debuting to the public at PAX East this weekend. As for a retail launch, there’s nothing yet to report, but we’ll have it for you as soon as it’s revealed.
