Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 Pro-exclusive update is here

Looking better than ever on the PS5 Pro is CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. The update for the first-person RPG is live.

Cyberpunk gets some new chrome

We’ll kick this off with the obligatory note about Cyberpunk 2077‘s troubled launch. The first-person role-playing game from CD Projekt Red has long-since left that stage of its life in the rearview mirror however. While it’s still not perfect, it’s been massively improved thanks to a host of fixes that’ve come post-launch.

Sure, there was the paid Phantom Liberty expansion as well, which brought a ton more play time, but it was the updates that took care of the core issues. Thanks to those, the game has been cleaned up significantly since it hit consoles and the PC in 2020. And while you can say what you want about the process, the end result has been pretty terrific. But if you thought that Night City had no more improvements en route, think again. And yes, we’re talking about the PlayStation 5 Pro version of the game specifically.

Making that a reality is an update exclusive to that console, which CD Projekt Red’s unleashed today. It’s a patch that we didn’t think was even in the works, but is nonetheless here. And as you’d expect, it’s boosted the already great looking title even more.

Starting today, PS5 Pro owners can download the free update to Cyberpunk 2077, which makes full use of the console’s hardware to provide optimized performance, enhanced visual fidelity with upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing features, and more. The update is designed to leverage the full capabilities of the hardware, providing even greater immersion when exploring the dark future.

Three modes, for the Pros

The above update, which again is only available for use on Sony’s PS5 Pro console, delivers “smoother performance, higher visual fidelity, and expanded ray tracing features”. Those come via a trio of new graphics modes, with Performance, Ray Tracing, and Ray Tracing Pro.

Performance mode is basically what you’d expect. Look for “the highest possible frame rate for those who prioritize fast, fluid gameplay” under that selection. On the other end of the spectrum is Ray Tracing Pro. That mode will give players “the full range of available ray tracing enhancements”.

As you might imagine as well, there’s also a middle ground, and that’s where Ray Tracing mode comes in. Via that option, fans can get “a balance between visuals and performance”. There’s more to all of this of course, and if you’d like to get deeper into it, click here for the full patch notes.

Before we go too, it should be mentioned that the core Cyberpunk 2077 game is playable for some tiers of Sony’s PlayStation Plus plan. Those who subscribe to the Extra and Premium levels can dig into Night City right now. And agin, if they’re playing that game so on the PS5 Pro console, it’ll include the above update.
