Check out The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu’s co-op madness (and launch date)

Another trip into the insanity of Lovecraftian fiction is almost here with The Mound. Check out the latest look at gameplay.

The Mound and the madness

One of a couple of Lovecraft-inspired games coming along for consoles and the PC, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu takes a decidedly different path. Instead of a creeping horror, the game presents co-op FPS action. Though that’s not to say that it’s without some of the trappings of the lore it’s based on.

Far from it actually, as The Mound casts players as Spanish explorers who’ve landed on an expedition. The New World is the setting for that, as players will have to complete a series of objectives, while battling unknown forces. And naturally, there will be an insanity mechanic.

The new trailer delves pretty deeply into that, showcasing just what developer ACE Team and NACON have in store. From the looks of it too, you won’t be able to trust your own eyes, as friends can appear as foes. That’s an interesting idea for sure, and one that we don’t think we’ve seen play out in a video game before.

You and your companions are on the deck of your galleon. El Capitán has given you a contract to fulfill: gather as much wealth as possible, find a missing person, locate an ancient fort, and, if possible, return safe and sound from this perilous expedition. As soon as you set foot on the shore, at the edge of the jungle, a vague sense of dread takes hold. In this jungle, treasures and mysteries await you, but so do unspeakable entities ready to make you regret ever setting foot in their territory.

NACON press release

As you a see at the close of that video, a new look at gameplay is only half of today’s news. The other is that we’ve finally got a release date for The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu. That would be July 15th, 2026, by the way. It’s then that the title will arrive for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

So for those who like to explore the unknown of other realms, potentially deadly and supernatural foes, and co-operative action gameplay, mark your calendars.
