A miniseries spinning off of an event book? That’s Knightfight in a nutshell, a book that’ll present Batman versus… Batmen.
From K.O. to Gotham
One of the biggest event books to spin out of DC Comics in recent years, DC K.O. is a brawl for it all. And by “it all”, we mean the ability to become the heir of the deceased (uh-huh) Darkseid’s Omega power. So whoever wins will become King (or presumably, Queen) Omega.
With all of that in mind, DC K.O. features a set of battles that are stacked with heavy-hitters. Those will come both in the form of the obvious, as well as the somewhat… not-so obvious. Yes, the likes of Superman, Big Barda, Lobo and more will be there, but so will Cheetah, Firestorm, and even Harley Quinn. How some of these matchups will play out is a part of the fun, but there are some questions as well. Maybe the biggest one, is what’s the story with Batman?
While the Dark Knight is shown on the promotional art for the series, he’s also set to star in his own spinoff. So does that mean he’ll be pulling double-duty, and be showcased in DC K.O.’s battles as well as what’s been dubbed Knightfight?
As it turns out, the answer is kind of ‘yes’ to both. According to a recent interview with writer Joshua Williamson, Batman won’t be in the main competition at all, though again, that doesn’t mean he’s not involved. Instead, the Heart of Apokolips itself will be bending reality and sending him down his own path. That would be Knightfight’s special tournament, and against some characters that he knows quite well.
Or, at the very least, versions of them.
Don’t bring a batarang to a Knightfight
We’ve known about Knightfight for some time now, but only in terms of its basic theme. And that would be Batman facing off against a series of possible Batmen from the future. Yes, those will even be including his own sons, both biological and adopted.
Today saw all of that get a host of additional detailing, including what the setting will be, and how it’ll all be going down. Now don’t worry, DC Comics didn’t spill any real heavy spoilers, but if you’ve been looking forward to Knightfight, and the rest of DC K.O., you’re going to want to read through the preview of issue #1 that we’ve got you, as well as the just released mini-interview with series writer Joshua Williamson.
From what’s being shown here, it’s going to be a comic to remember.

And just in case you can’t get the image viewer above to display that interview correctly, we’ve got the transcript for you below.
Get ready to witness Batman like never before in DC K.O. Knightfight, the explosive tie-in to this fall’s hard-hitting DC K.O. event. Writer Joshua Williamson shares what fans can expect from Gotham’s deadliest arena, the high-stakes battles against the Batmen of the future, and the thrilling twists that make this a must-read miniseries.
DC K.O. Knightfight throws Batman into Gotham’s deadliest tournament. What excited you most about telling this story?
In the past, Bruce has often questioned his role as Batman, and whether the sidekicks he’s trained might one day surpass him. Now, he gets to see that play out firsthand.
I also love throwing Batman into wild, unexpected battles, facing off against opponents he’d never normally encounter. Once he realizes what’s really going on, he can finally cut loose.
What can you tease about Batman’s battle against the Batmen of the future?
These fights are emotionally charged, but at their core, this is a FIGHT COMIC, packed with big, over-the-top action. Batman faces off against Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian in newly created versions of Gotham, each one shaped by the Heart of Apokolips. These worlds reflect the essence of each character, and are designed specifically to defeat Bruce.
And there are a few surprise appearances from other Bat-Family members we haven’t revealed yet. It’s not just the Robins…
How does this tie-in series expand on what’s happening in DC K.O.? What inspired giving Batman this alternate route in the DC K.O. tournament?
When you talk about an event like DC K.O., the assumption is always: “Batman’s going to win.” So we wanted to subvert that expectation right away, by forcing him down a completely different path, into a tournament built just for him.
It also showcases the true power of the Heart of Apokolips, how it can manipulate and reshape anyone who comes near it. That’s going to become a major factor as the event unfolds.
How does working on Knightfight with Dan Mora differ from your collaboration on Superman?
Dan is incredible, a legend, and an amazing creative partner. Because these issues are so fight-heavy, I leave a lot more room in the scripts for him to go wild.
He’s also designing entirely new worlds, new costumes, new versions of Gotham, and new Batmen. We’re still aiming to have a ton of fun with it, and Dan always delivers on that front.
Without giving too much away, are there any standout moments you’re especially excited for fans to experience?
Every issue has a big moment. There are a few that I think will absolutely blow readers’ minds, and leave them wishing these new worlds were real.
