3D Realms and Anshar Studios’ new Painkiller title is almost here. Get a deeper look at it in action via the first dev diary.
Painkiller reports
You might have a pretty strong opinion one way or the other on the Painkiller reboot. The first-person shooter takes the classic series and reforges it after all. That means all-new heroes, a fresh storyline, and a focus on co-operative play.
That’s all a fair shake different from what the classic line of titles brought to the table. Naturally, and maybe understandably, that’s struck a bit of a nerve with legacy fans. But just in case you’ve got an open mind about it, or you’re otherwise on the fence, you might want to take a look at the new(ish) developer diary that’s been released.
The first in a series of such videos, dev diary #1 takes potential players behind the scenes. There they’ll join members of the team at Anshar, where they’ll see what was pulled from those originals to make the new Painkiller. Yes, there are things that’ve been brought over, specifically in the way of the game’s arsenal.
But, that said, there’s also a ton that’s new.
Choose your weapon
As you can see there, fans of the iconic Painkiller classics should find quite a bit to like about the new game’s weapons. Callbacks like the electro-driver and stake gun should make for a fun time, especially for those who fondly remember Daniel Garner and his exploits. As you can also see though, if you’re playing alone, you’ll be in for one heck of a fight.
The game is tailored for co-op, and having a pair of pals along for the ride looks like it’ll make play a bit more fun. At least, that’s to say it looks more fun for those who don’t want to get knocked around too much. Nope, Painkiller doesn’t look like it’ll be pulling too many punches for those who are sans allies.
Solo players will have to watch their supplies and ammo, in order to make it through the game’s crowds of foes and mightier demons. Though, we can’t help but wonder if the ability to modify the title’s famed arsenal won’t even the odds.
If you’d like to try your hand at surviving hell’s invasion of Purgatory, Painkiller drops just in time for Halloween. Look for it on the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC on October 21st, 2025.
