Atomfall uncovers a new part of the zone with The Red Strain DLC

A whole new part of the quarantine zone has been uncovered. Atomfall players can now dig into the new story expansion, The Red Strain.

Atomfall expands

Released in March of this year, Rebellion’s Atomfall debuted to a terrific reception. The open-world survival game delivered genre fans into the quarantine zone, for an adventure that was actually based on a real-world happening. It’s one that isn’t all that well known either, in the Windscale nuclear incident from the 1950s.

While the real world instance didn’t result in lasting devastation, the game’s version was much bigger. It triggered a wall to be built, separating the affected area from the rest of the UK. And as it happened, that led to all kinds of fantastical things on the wrong end of that barrier.

Now that already lengthy adventure has gotten even larger. It’s thanks to a second post-launch expansion (here’s the first), with the just-launched The Red Strain downloadable content. This new adventure is looking quite meaty too, bringing fans to an all new location called Test Site Moriah.

Did someone say ‘zombies’? Well, maybe. Kinda.

Nestled in the hills, away from the prying eyes of the locals, lies Test Site Moriah. A secret research site built by B.A.R.D on the site of an old missile testing facility, it has been shrouded in mystery ever since it opened. But something changed when the quarantine came into effect. Now, the facility has fallen into more nefarious hands, and a deadly virus is seeping out from the secret network of underground labs and bunkers. But a route back into the facility has been located, and with it the opportunity to finally get some answers.

Rebellion press release

Better dead than red

How’s that for an action packed look at what The Red Strain has in store? It certainly looks like Test Site Moriah will hold more than a few horrors to tackle. And obviously those will include both the infected and the robotic.

In the expansion, players will dig deep into the top-secret former research facility, which Rebellion says has been “hidden away for years”. But it’s not just the location and fresh foes that lie in wait. Fans will also find new items in this new part of the zone. And that’s not all as players can also “upgrade unique abilities” that can be used throughout the main game too. So there’s a little something to take out of the expansion, and back to the rest of Atomfall.

Speaking of, and as you might imagine, there’s some new hardware just begging to be put to work as well. Players will be able to use suppressed weapons on that end, which should come in handy for keeping things quiet. There’s more too, as the pack offers the ability to harness the power of robotic enemies.

If you’re ready to roll into this new arena, The Red Strain is out right now for all versions of Atomfall. The pack is priced in at $19.99 USD. Also worth mentioning, is that there’s a dose of new merch that’s dropped onto the Rebellion Store. That includes everything from mugs to tees, and is up right now for your perusal.
