Revving up is Sega’s next big racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, as the title will be crossing over with PAC-MAN and getting an open test.
Crossing over worlds
Announced some time ago, the next game in Sega’s long-running Sonic Racing series is almost here. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will debut for consoles and the PC on September 25th, and when it does, it’ll have a little bit more guest-star power with it.
Said star, as you can see from the above, is the legendary icon PAC-MAN. Bandai Namco’s little yellow guy will be a part of the game’s season pass (DLC) roster, along with his nemesis’. Yep, the ghosts are coming along for the ride, plus a track inspired “by the video game icon’s modern and classic arcade-era PAC-MAN games”.
This crossover also won’t be a one way street, as Bandai Namco’s upcoming PAC-MAN World 2: RePAC will get some Sonic flavor in return.
To PAC-LAND and beyond
Along with PAC-MAN being included in the game’s first season of downloadable content, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to feature plenty of other guest characters. The racer will host a selection of Sonic-related stars, plus the likes of Joker, Kasuga Ichiban, and Hatsune Miku from some of Sega’s other franchises.
The Digital Deluxe Edition will expand that even more, bringing in Minecraft and a spread of nickelodeon properties. Fans can look for SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Avatar to all be onboard. And on top of all of that, those who pre-order the Standard or Digital Deluxe edition of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds before launch will also get Sonic the Werehog, as seen in Sonic Unleashed.
Both of the above editions are up for pre-order right now, for the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. The Switch 2 edition of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will go up for pre-order later this year digitally, with a physical edition coming in 2026.
Worth a note too, is that there’ll be a digital upgrade path for Nintendo’s consoles. So owners of the Switch version will be able to upgrade their game digitally, to the Switch 2.
Testing, testing
Along with all of the above, this Gamescom show also saw the reveal of an open network test for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Fans looking forward to getting their hands on the game will be able to get an early taste of the action, when that test goes live next week.
There’s one caveat though, in that the test is for current-gen consoles only. And with that, we’re talking about the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch. It also doesn’t seem as though there will be a test of any kind for the likes of the Xbox One or PS4 (or Switch 2 for that matter). But if you have access, y9o can look for the open network test to kick off on Friday, August 29th, and run through Monday, September 1st.
During it, fans will be able to race as Sonic “and friends” free of charge. Get the full details here on Sega’s site.
