Dante’s legendary story about plunging into the depths of hell is coming back to gaming, with La Divina Commedia.
Abandon all hope, ye who enters here
Written in the 1300’s by Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy is a piece of fiction that’s certainly stood the test of time. The tale sent Dante and Virgil (not *that* Dante and Virgil) into the abyss, detailing each level of hell as the pair made their way. As iconic as it is though, there’ve been only a handful of adaptations in any medium, let along video games. As far as we can remember, there was only one of those, and it’s been years since its debut.
Looking to change the story’s fortune though, is Italian developer Jyamma Games, who are preparing La Divina Commedia. Not a direct adaptation, this new game will tell “a story of a tragic loss and a great sacrifice, inspired by Divine Comedy”, according to the devs.
Jyamma Games adds that the title will feature action/RPG gameplay, and in an inferno comprised of procedurally generated dungeons. Do we detect a bit of ‘souls-like’ action in play as well? It’s not mentioned in the press release, but just a vibe that we’re getting.
Either way though, La Divina Commedia is looking pretty sharp in this first look, straight from Gamescom.
Breach the depths of Hell and battle against demonic forces as a warrior-poet who has been lured into and trapped within the underworld. As you descend the infernal circles, seeking an escape, you confront ever-stronger foes while struggling to atone for your sinful past. Defeat the armies of darkness and face the ultimate choice, one that will decide whether or not The Divine Comedy is restored to its former glory.

Wish-listing of La Divina Commedia is open right now via Steam (for the PC), though there’s no release date that’s been announced. So if you’re interested in taking the game’s trip through the netherworld, stay tuned.
