Gamescom ’25: Explore the swordplay and creatures of Onimusha: Way of the Sword

The gameplay for Capcom’s upcoming rebirth for the classic Onimusha series got a much deeper look at Gamescom.

Time to musha some monsters

We couldn’t be much more excited about Capcom bringing the classic Onimiusha series back with Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The upcoming sequel to the trio of PS2-era classics looks to feature a whole new cast, including hero Musashi Miyamoto, as well as new threats and gameplay to tackle them with. We got a good look at both of those angles of the game via a fresh trailer that debuted at the Gamescom show today, and were pretty darn impressed.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is looking spectacular so far, and its cadre of horrific monsters are just as vile as series-fans might’ve hoped. Loaded into the new trailer are the likes of the Chimeric Greater Nue, the tentacled mass of faces that is the Chijiko, and the Kogashira. Those last foes should be more familiar than the rest for anyone who’s followed Onimusha, as they’re humans who’ve been “warped by parasitic Genma”.

As for how fans will be battling against those vicious creeps, that’ll come by way of a host of means. And yes, they include the iconic Soul Absorption by the way of the gauntlet, and the counterattack that is the Issen. Aside from those gameplay elements though, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will also star archery, a cool-looking double-bladed weapon, and both deflection and parries.

All of the above come in addition to something called “Blazing State” as well. To activate that, Musashi Miyamoto will have to land multiple parries that generate Blue Souls. Those will fuel up his Oni Power and facilitate some damaging special moves.

Ready to see all of that in action? Hit ‘play’ below.

Deep beneath the game’s setting of Kyoto is a secret laboratory where a sinister and enigmatic entity known as Dokyo toils away creating new Genma. Her twisted creations include:

  • Greater Nue: A ferocious, Chimeric beast that can harness the power of lightning.
  • Kogashira: Humans warped by parasitic Genma that create poisonous clouds of Malice.
  • Chijiko: A grotesque mass of interwoven human faces with far-reaching tentacles.

To carve a path through these abominations, protagonist Musashi Miyamoto wields his own powers, including the iconic Issen and Soul Absorption abilities at the core of the Onimusha™experience:

  • Deflect: A defensive action that reflects attacks back at enemies – including projectiles.
  • Parry: Well-timed blocks parrying incoming attacks can stagger foes, create openings for counterattacks, and even knock enemies back into their allies or terrain.
  • Blazing State: A temporary offensive power-up triggered by landing multiple parries that also generates Blue Souls fueling special attacks using Oni Power.
  • Soul Absorption: Choose the right moment in the heat of battle to absorb the souls of defeated foes to recover health, enhance equipment, unlock new abilities, and more.
  • Issen: Strike enemies a split-second before they land a blow to unleash this high-risk, high-reward counterattack that is an iconic element of the Onimusha series.
Capcom press release

There’s no release date just yet for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but we do know that it’s coming up some time in 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam).
