It’s star-spangled covers galore, as Marvel reveals the variants for Captain America #1

One of the greatest Avengers is getting a fresh number one this summer, and Captain America #1 will play host to a full spread of variant covers.

Thumbs up soldier

It’s time for another first issue, and another fresh run for one of Marvel Comics’ greatest and longest-running superheroes. That hero, as you can see above, is Captain America and his newest run will start off with a story that harkens back to his first days out of the arctic ice.

In its first story arc, writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Valerio Schiti will wind back the clock, all the way to Cap’s first mission upon his return to action. Set after that event but before Steve Rogers became an Avenger, the series will pit him against one of the biggest villains of the day (both then and now) with Doctor Doom. Again though, that’s just the first arc. Once that initial tale is completed, the series will lead fans into a story set in the present day, one that ties directly into previous events.

So that’s the story, but there’s naturally a collection of variant covers planned for it as well. Hey, this is a Captain America #1. You didn’t think Marvel Comics would let it slip by without issuing a variant or… eleven did you?

While Captain America slumbered in ice, the world changed – for better and for worse. Steve Rogers awakens to a reality where battles are fought in the shadows through secrets and subterfuge, and villains aren’t so easy to identify. When a fledgling dictator named Victor Von Doom conquers Latveria, Steve faces a critical decision: adapt to a new kind of warfare, or forge his own path? And what will the choice he makes in the past mean for his future? Experience the untold tale of Captain America’s first encounter with Doctor Doom!

I’m having a blast,” Zdarsky told Newsarama in a recent interview. “I’ve got the same feeling as I did when I started Daredevil, where each issue felt incredibly special, so I hope people feel the same way when they finally get to read it. Our first arc may be set in the past but it’s going to reveal some huge things that will affect the book going forward.”
