It’s an eldritch surprise, as The Sinking City Remastered emerges from the void today

How’s this for unexpected? Frogwares’ The Sinking City Remastered has surprise launched for consoles and PC today.

The Sinking rises

Originally released back in 2019, Frogwares’ The Sinking City sent players on an adventure of Lovecraftian proportions. With a slowly flooding New England town for its setting, the game served up a cast of creepy characters, a mysteriously cosmic horror-story, and a fair shake of action to boot. With a few years under its belt, the now-series saw a Kickstarter begin in 2024 to fund a sequel. And it was during that very campaign, that a remaster of the original was revealed.

The Sinking City Remastered seems quite the improvement too, as it swaps Unreal Engine 4 for Unreal Engine 5 and brings in 4k textures. That’s plus a new photo mode, support for “DLSS, FSR and TSR upscaling”, and enhancements to its locales “with additional levels of detail and objects”. On top of all of the above too, fans can expect to see “gameplay adjustments, certain accessibility features and more”, all according to the developer.

From the looks of the trailer, it’s quite a boost indeed.

”We plan to do big things with The Sinking City IP, starting with the sequel and then beyond. So, after our rather well-known struggles with the original, it feels amazing to have this positive moment be part of the game’s twisted history and for us to be the ones to fully decide it. Making it free to all our existing fans is our way of giving back to them for having supported us all this time through thick and thin.”

Sergiy Oganesyan, Publishing Director, Frogwares

The Sinking City Remastered is out now for the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, and as you can see above, if you’ve got a copy of the original, you’re in for a treat. According to Frogwares, the revision “has been made for free to all existing owners of the game”. We take that to mean owners of the digital edition of that original release, though the wording is a little nebulous, so we can’t say for sure.
