Sea of Stars’ Throes of the Watchmaker free DLC coming next month

Retro-ish JRPG sensation Sea of Stars is getting a brand new adventure by way of a free DLC drop next month.

Malevolent spectacle awaits

Released in August 2023 (and winner of our game of the month), Sea of Stars was a gem. A classically-styled JRPG, the title hailed from Sabotage Studio, and heralded a grand adventure that was loaded with detail, personality, and some terrific sights and sounds. And while we haven’t heard anything about a potential followup, we now know that the long-awaited DLC is coming next month.

The new adventure is dubbed Throes of the Watchmaker, and will send heroes Zale and Valere into a miniature world, harangued by an evil carnival. The new quest will run for a reported eight hours, delivering “never-before-seen areas, puzzles and enemies throughout a compelling storyline wholly unique from Sea of Stars’ core adventure”, according to Sabotage. Even better, the pack will be highlighted by music from the main game’s Lead Composer, Eric W. Brown, and Chrono Trigger’s own Yasunori Mitsuda, who’s back as a guest composer.

Throes of the Watchmaker returns to one of the most intriguing characters encountered in Sea of Stars’ main adventure – the genius inventor known as the Watchmaker, architect of the Clockwork Castle and creator of Wheels, a tabletop pastime enjoyed throughout Sea of Stars’ world. The DLC explores a fascinating invention by the Watchmaker, the miniature clockwork world of Horloge, a land threatened by a cursed carnival. Zale and Valere must adapt to Horloge’s peculiar rules to fully realize their mastery of Sun and Moon powers, the abilities they’ve refined since the beginning of Sea of Stars’ central journey to stop the Fleshmancer with Eclipse Magic.

Sabotage Studios press release

Sea of Stars’ Throes of the Watchmaker is on track for a May 20th release, for all versions of the game. As mentioned above, it’ll be a free download, but it does sound like this new adventure will be only accessible once the main quest is completed. So if you’ve yet to beat that, you might want to get going before you download.
