NACON’s two upcoming Cthulhu games couldn’t be more different

One publisher, two Cthulhu games? Yep, both Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss and The Mound: Omen Of Cthulhu are coming up.

Pick your cosmic poison

With both games being hinted and teased at for a while, Cthulhu fans have known that they were in for a double dose of Lovecraftian horror. Now publisher NACON has seen fit to show some of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss and The Mound: Omen Of Cthulhu in action, and the two are looking sharp. Though, we should clarify that we mean that in two very different ways.

First up and launching this year will be The Mound: Omen Of Cthulhu, a title that’ll bring fans four-player multiplayer action. Inspired by The Mound, a short story from Lovecraft, The Mound: Omen Of Cthulhu is set in a deep and dark jungle, sending players on a treasure hunt as a team of Conquistadors. Of course, what they find just might be the death of them.

The Mound: Omen Of Cthulhu

ACE Team, the studio behind Clash: Artifacts of Chaos and the Zeno Clash series, takes on a new genre with The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, a first-person horror game with online co-op for up to 4 players. Inspired by Lovecraft’s novella The Mound, this game puts players in the shoes of a squad of conquistadors on an expedition to discover a legendary underground city rumored to hold priceless treasures.

Deep within an eerie and oppressive jungle, players must explore and survive monstrous, otherworldly entities that distort their senses and threaten their sanity… and their lives. Was that sound just an hallucination? Am I losing my mind and attacking my ally, or is there truly a hostile creature lurking in the shadows? As players venture deeper into the jungle, only teamwork will ensure they make it back alive.

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is coming up fast from developer ACE Team, and will be delivering its action later this year. Look for it on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss

While The Mound looks like it might be a pretty good time, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a lot more of what we think of when we think ‘Lovecraft’. Steeped in terror and apparent encroaching insanity, the first look at developer Big Bad Wolf’s first-person adventure title is looking great, and stars a man named Noah.

Just to make you aware though, Noah is no ordinary Joe. He’s a member of a special Interpol task force that deals with the occult. His latest case is a doozy too, sending him to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, where he just might meet a certain alien god.

Big Bad Wolf, the studio behind the acclaimed narrative games The Council and Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, presents Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, a thrilling investigative adventure inspired by Lovecraft’s universe. In this first-person psychological thriller, players take on the role of Noah, an agent of Ancile, a secret Interpol division specializing in occult cases, as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of miners in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. His quest will lead him to the labyrinthine prison of R’lyeh, an ancient sunken city where Cthulhu is imprisoned. Alongside his AI companion Key, Noah must solve complex puzzles, make choices that will shape his fate, and resist the mind-corrupting influence of Cthulhu.

NACON press release

While The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is coming this year, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss won’t be along until some time in 2026. As with the previous title though, fans will be able to look for it on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
