Starring the iconic purple and black-clad hero, brand new side-scroller The Phantom has a demo up now for Steam’s Next Fest.
The Ghost Who Walks
Hailed as the first costumed superhero in comics, The Phantom hasn’t been seen in quite a while. Unless you count the terrific action figures made a few years ago by NECA, we actually can’t remember when the last piece of media was produced that featured the hero. Was it the 90s Fox Kids ‘toon, Phantom 2040? Might’ve been.
Be that as it may (or may not) though, the pulp star has indeed returned, this time in a brand new side-scrolling action game. From Art of Play Interactive and King Features, The Phantom stars both Kit Walker (The Phantom) and Diana Palmer, in a beat ’em up adventure that’s spread out across 14 levels of either solo or co-op play.
While the title’s actual gameplay is modeled after old school goodness, the game sports a unique look, thanks to its hand-drawn visuals that are meant to honor the hero’s original medium. That art style includes both the cut-scenes and actual sprites, and has former Marvel and DC Comics talent behind it.
Check it out in action below.
The Phantom is an arcade-style beat-em-up coming to PC and consoles. Play as The Phantom or his partner, Diana Palmer, in this 14-level adventure. The feared pirates of the Singh Brotherhood are battling for power and threatening The Phantom’s legacy, and it’s up to you to stop them. Use your hand-to-hand fighting skills and trusty weapons to dispatch this evil, and call in assistance from your animal friends Fraka the falcon and Devil the wolf. The Phantom features a brand-new story approved by King Features. Experience this canon addition through full-screen cut scenes and captivating in-game visuals, hand illustrated and animated frame-by-frame by seasoned comic book artists and Art Of Play’s dedicated in-house 2D creative team.
