Witness Atomfall’s post-disaster world in the newest look at the survival action game

Giving off a serious medieval/modern mashup vibe is Atomfall, a survival action title coming up this spring from Rebellion.

Children of the atom

One of the more intriguing games on the way for early 2025 has to be Atomfall. From Sniper Elite and Zombie Army developer Rebellion, the new game is radically different than what you’d expect, and presents what certainly seems to be a fairly unique vision.

In Atomfall, players take on the role of someone who’s been locked away in a nuclear bunker for a while. The reason for the isolation was some kind of disaster that befell the Windscale atom plant in Northern England. Just what happened to said facility is one of the questions that will hopefully be answered in the game’s campaign, all of which apparently takes place in the Windscale quarantine zone.

A place that’s more or less been knocked back to the middle-ages, the setting of the zone looks to be one of the most interesting we’ve seen in a while. This isn’t your usual bleak and barren ‘post-apocalyptic’ land. Inside its borders, those who brave it will find a world teeming with flora and fauna, with many people who are just trying to live their lives. That said, there’s also a series of maniacs, creatures, criminals, and giant robots. Yeah, those too.

Opening in an abandoned bunker five years after a nuclear disaster in Northern England, the trailer shows how players enter the world of Atomfall. In this scene an unnamed worker in a hazmat suit stumbles into your room and asks, “who are you?” This question is just one of the mysteries that players will need to solve if they are to find out what happened at the Windscale atom plant.

From here the trailer teases more of the settings and landscapes that players will need to explore as they get to grips with life inside the quarantine zone. This slice of Northern England includes everything from open moors, rugged hills, dense woodlands and the picture-perfect English village Wyndham. But beware, this is a dangerous and hostile landscape filled with gangs of outlaws, crazed cultists and unexplained horrors. Even the local wildlife poses an immense threat to your life. If you are to navigate this land and survive, you will need to fight for your life and scavenge resources.

Atomfall is packed with a cast of quirky and eccentric characters that you will meet on your journey. These people have been isolated from the world for some time and while many have adopted a “keep calm and carry on” mentality, some have sought to seize power and twisted events for their own gain. Others have even slipped into more nefarious ways… Your interactions with these characters will uncover various leads, secrets and story threads that will help you discover the truth of what happened during the Windscale disaster. But, needless to say, not everyone you meet means you well and deciding who to trust in the quarantine zone is a matter of life or death.

Rebellion press release

Buying into the zone

Windscale beckons, as Atomfall gets ready for release on March 27th, 2025. Those wanting to dive in can look for it to land for the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC (via Steam and Epic). It’s also set to arrive for GamePass on day one, so for those who subscribe, you’re already in for the adventure.

If you’re buying a copy though, you might want to pre-order and snag yourself the Basic Supply Bundle DLC. That’ll grant you “additional items and supplies to uncover as you explore”, according to Rebellion. The pack can be had by pre-ordering either the digital or physical edition of the game, though there’s another bonus for those who pre-order Atomfall’s digital-only Deluxe Edition.

Those fans will get quite a bit more, with the “Enhanced Supply Bundle, which includes an exclusive pistol variant, metal detector skin and a skill manual giving character upgrades, as well as three days early access. Players will also receive the Story Expansion DLC when released**.”

* Early unlock up to three days before the release date. Platform and dates availability subject to change.

** Story Expansion not available day one.
