The Mafia series has typically told its tale of organized crime in America, but it’s about to head back to The Old Country.
Never talk about the family…
When last we saw Mafia, as a series, it was for a remastering of the 2002 original. The open-world crime saga that started it all, Mafia spawned two sequels, with each one weaving the core theme of organized crime in the US through its own time period. The just announced newest title in the series though, will be heading somewhere completely different.
From 2K and developer Hangar 13, Mafia: The Old Country will bring the action back to the beginning, and to the hills of Sicily. It’s there that players will meet (and play as) Enzo, a young man with a tragic past who’s out to make sure his future is a bright one.
And in Sicily, that means working as a part of Don Torrisi’s family.
Through grit and determination, Enzo has survived a childhood of indentured labor in Sicily’s hellish sulfur mines. Now, through a twist of fate, he has the opportunity to join Don Torrisi’s crime family, and will do whatever it takes to carve out a better life for himself. By swearing an oath, Enzo has committed himself to the Torrisi family’s code of honor, with all the power and hardship it entails. He must never forget this simple truth: Family Takes Sacrifice.
“Mafia: The Old Country is a love letter to old-style, gritty Mafia stories where players can uncover the origins of organized crime,” said Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13, “Everyone at Hangar 13 is committed to creating the most authentic and intense story of the franchise, and we can’t wait for players to experience the journey with Enzo.”
2K press release
It’s tough not to get excited about that trailer, as Mafia: The Old Country looks like something that fans really haven’t seen before. For its part, 2K is promising quite a bit with the game as well, packing in combat, “high-stakes, grounded stealth”, and of course gunplay.
But remember that Mafia: The Old Country is taking place a good deal of time before what you might’ve played before in the series. And while it will feature turn-of-the-century cars, it’ll also have you playing missions on horseback and walking the protection beat on foot. Speaking of ‘protection’, you an forget Chicago typewriters, though a stiletto blade and a sawed-off shotgun should do uh, whatever job, nicely.
Watch for Mafia: The Old Country to appear for both consoles and the PC some time in 2025.
