A side-scrolling beat ’em up for the modern crowd, Shing! is set to try and reinvent the classic genre, though in ways that should keep it familiar.
Shing!
Game name of the year? Yeah, maybe. But Shing! is also a pretty nice looking action title. The team at Mass Creation, an indie studio, has been hard at work on the game, and is ready to show it off, as well as talk up what they’re trying to achieve with it.
As a genre, the beat ’em up isn’t all that deep or complex. You mainly move from left to right (with some exceptions) and fight off attackers. Want to shake things up? Add in some special moves, a’la Street Fighter, and that’s about it… right? Well, maybe not.
As Mass Creation reveals, they’re actually truing some new things with Shing!. That includes little tweaks to the formula, like making characters not scale with the background when they move front-to-back on the 2D plane, and also some major things, like attacking with the right analog stick.
In some ways Shing! is a whole new game.
Interested? If you’re a genre fan, then you probably are (I know I am). Well, if you are, then you’ll be pleased to know that Shing! is coming up fast. The game launches on August 28th, for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC and Mac.
