Techland birthed Dead Island as a franchise, and has since moved onto Dying Light, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t like another crack at the tropical undead.
You might be familiar with what’s happening with Dead Island 2, but just in case you’re not, it’s kind of a mess. Seemingly on track and heading towards a release this year, DI2 was first pushed into 2016, and now has hit a massive road block in the form of its developer Yager getting the axe from publisher Deep Silver. There was really no reason given for the split either, but it’s set DI2 back. Way back.
Enter Techland, with a semi-offer to take up the series once again. Game producer Tymon Smektala recently said that he would “personally would love to go back to Dead Island because I really love that game”. As you might expect, even though the developer is currently working on an extremely popular zombie series with Dying Light, they view Dead Island with a warm and fuzzy glow since they created it.
So it’s not too outside the realm of the imagination to think that they’d like another crack at it. And even though it’d mean they’d be running a pair of zombie series’, they think they could make both different enough that both games could hang onto their individual audiences.
It’s an interesting idea, and one that would certainly play right into what Deep Silver needs right now. Not only is Techland a proven developer when it comes to zombie games, but they created the series in the first place! It might be a little bit of a stretch, but rehiring the developer could be a pretty nice little fit.
Stay tuned
