Wolverine finds himself transporting more than just whiskey across the Canadian border into the prohibition-era US when a group of young orphans needs a protector from the mob.
Pretty interesting stuff for a Wolverine story isn’t it? This is a remarkably ‘small’ and personal tale about the mutant who will be Wolverine and takes place way before the X-Men or Logan’s memory loss will come on the scene in the Marvel U.
The year is 1933 at the height of Prohibition. Dust storms rage in the Midwest – and the man who will become the Wolverine makes his living carrying whiskey across the border from Canada. That is, until he finds himself the accidental caretaker of a group of orphans who’ve been targeted by the mob.
Richard is a master of noir, and he brings that sensibility to Wolverine in his earlier, more formative years, says Editor Jeanine Schaefer. “He’s crafted a Logan who’s been hardened by a life of violence, but still holds out hope for peace…and in the end one side of him must come out on top. Richard’s art has never looked better — I think readers are going to get hooked on his very specific brand of storytelling!“
Now, the first “X-Man” must choose between the anonymous life he’s chosen or stepping out into the spotlight to defend the innocent once more. Witness an early tale of the mutant who will become the Wolverine as he faces his destiny as the hero he was born to be this January in SAVAGE WOLVERINE 14.NOW!
A part of the All-New Marvel NOW! branding, Savage Wolverine #14.NOW kicks off the Wrath story arc by writer and artist Richard Isanove. It’s not unheard of to have a writer/artist on a book- but it is quite rare. I can only actually think of a handful of instances of a talent pulling double-duty in the last few years and Isanove looks to be doing both ends of the spectrum justice in his efforts in the pages of Savage Wolverine.
Actually, he’s even working outside of the pages as he’s also handling the cover art on the standard cover- now that’s a lot of work! Other than Isanove’s illustration, fans should also be on the lookout for variants by Phil Noto and Chris Samnee. It’s kind of a big issue for the Canadian mutant, as it fills in yet another blank in Logan’s life, so if you’re a devotee you might want to grab ’em all.
Savage Wolverine #14.NOW hits the stands on January 8th for an extra-brutal New Year.
