Nightdive’s remake of System Shock is Switch-bound

SHODAN and her army of mutants are coming to Nintendo consoles. NightDive has revealed System Shock will hit Switch and Switch 2.

System Shock’s terror, on the go

Fans of the classic PC first-person shooter System Shock have had quite a few years. Both of the original games have been remastered, and the full-blown remake of the original finally debuted for both PC and consoles.

But if you thought that was going to be it for the IP with developer NightDive, think again. Spinning out of DreadXP’s Indie Horror Showcase, comes word that the company will be bringing that System Shock remake to a new set of consoles. And yes, those would be the Switch and the Switch 2.

The upcoming launches will join the previously released System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster on the platforms. And that means that fans can finally play through the entire saga (in one form or another) on Nintendo’s consoles.

Nightdive Studios’ stunningly faithful recreation of the 1994 sci-fi action shooter/immersive sim was released to critical acclaim for PC in 2023 and consoles in 2024. Soon, Nintendo gamers will experience this classic for the very first time; the original evil rogue AI, SHODAN, will flaunt her superiority from the palms of their hands as they journey through the dark depths of Citadel Station.

Shocking evolutions

As you can get a hint of in the trailer, this isn’t the same System Shock remake that we’ve seen to date. While the game itself appears to be a faithful port for either console, there are some Switch-specific enhancements to talk about.

Gyro-aiming looks to be available for both versions, but the Switch 2’s incarnation looks to offer much more. That edition will sport 1080p, 60fps performance, plus Joy-Con 2 mouse support. So those who prefer lining up the forces of SHODAN and knocking ’em down in classic style can do so.

According to NightDive, there’s also a host of features that’ve been enacted by way of “community-request”. We’re not sure of what those might be as of yet, but there looks to be a ways to go before launch, so we’re sure they’ll be shared sooner or later.

Oh, one more nice note, as it looks like both games will have retail box editions, and neither appear to be key-cards. That does bring a smile to our faces.
