Gamescom ’25: Something invasive and alien is on the loose in the upcoming VR title, Star Trek: Infection

Looking radically different from anything that we’ve seen before from the property, Star Trek: Infection is coming to VR headsets.

Fascinating

As any Star Trek fan could tell you, Vulcans are a cold and detached species. Though they’re a pillar of the Federation, the alien race is almost purely logical, leaving emotions to its distant past as a relic of a more savage time. And that’s one of the things that makes Star Trek: Infection look so… fascinating.

The upcoming virtual reality game hails from developer Played With Fire, along with publisher Broken Mirror Games, and in partnership with Viacom International Inc.. What makes it so unique is that it casts players as a Vulcan Starfleet officer who runs into something altogether different than anything the Federation has encountered before.

On a secret mission onboard the USS Lumen, the officer in question has been tasked with finding out what the heck happened the ship and her crew. But this task won’t be a simple one, as the ship’s been overrun with an entity that sure feels a little cosmic-horror-y to us.

And worse yet, it’s not only attached itself to the Vulcan, but it’s starting to break down his mental walls.

In Star Trek: Infection, players step into the boots of a Vulcan Starfleet officer tasked with a covert mission aboard the U.S.S. Lumen where things quickly spiral into a psychological and physical nightmare.

The ship is empty. The crew is missing. But something sentient and sinister has taken hold of everything, and now… it’s inside your body too. Mutating you physically and unlocking dangerous new abilities at the cost of your renowned Vulcan mind and composure.

Explore the U.S.S. Lumen. Fight or embrace the infection. And confront the darkness within the ship… and yourself.

Broken Mirror Games press release

Full body VR

Star Trek: Infection will be a full body virtual reality experience, meaning that players will have to tend to their entire form in the game. Yes, “tend”, as the mysterious title infection plays havoc with the Vulcan, mutating both appearance and telepathic powers as the game plays out. Or not.

It’ll be up to players to “manage” these mutations, deciding which ones to treat and which to allow to flourish. Picking the latter will allow for new abilities and powers, but at a cost since they’re not what you’d call ‘stable’. Either way you go in the game however, it seems as though the creature that haunts the ship will still prey upon the Vulcan’s sanity. In true cosmic horror fashion, players can expect the beast to start calling up traumatic memories, making things move in the darkness, and generally using fear as a weapon.

Fortunately, for physical threats to life and limb (however they might appear), players will be armed with a phaser, plus a tricorder to scan for both danger and resources. On the flip side, stealth is also quite possible, and maybe preferable at times, thanks to the iconic Vulcan nerve pinch.

Ready to go boldly in this new adventure? Star Trek: Infection is coming up some time later this year for Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets, plus Steam VR. Look for the former to launch first, followed “very shortly” by the latter.
