20 years later, Razer’s Boomslang heads back to the PC

A cutting edge mouse that took the PC gaming world by storm 20 years ago, Razer’s Boomslang is coming back with a limited release.

Boomslanging around

Razer’s Boomslang was, in many ways, the first ‘gaming mouse’. The peripheral helped create an industry, offering PC game fans a device that targeted their platform, and sported some slick tech. The latter came in the form of a (then) tremendous 2,000 DPI sensor under the hood, plus much wider mouse buttons than had been seen.

As an aside, this writer had one, and loved it to death. The form factor hasn’t been seen in decades, though now there’s a whole new Boomslang coming. And yes, that mouse will hardly be the version that you might remember.

Gaming mice today bear little resemblance to what was commonplace back at the turn of the millennium after all. And those differences will be on full display with The Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition. This shiny new mouse makes the classic version look positively quaint, ditching the original’s ball, and touting RGB lighting (natch’) and wireless connectivity.

Oh, and the DPI? Yeah, that number has gone from 2k to 45,000 now.

A limited release

As mentioned, the Razer Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition will not be a full-release, though it will be made available globally. How’s that? Well, there just aren’t going to be all that many made for that global audience to buy. And that means these could be a little scarce.

While details are hazy at present, we do know that the mouse will have a production run of 1,337 (get it?) units. Yes, that’s it. There’ll also be a highly collectible part to that series, as #1337 will sport an autograph from Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan.

As for the additional particulars, like how much these are going to cost, and when the pre-order/sale date will be, well we just don’t know. Razer’s being mum on those subjects for now, though you can sign up for updates via the official site here

“When we designed the Razer Boomslang, we just wanted to get the unfair advantage in gaming, and that single spark helped ignite the entire multi-billion dollar gaming peripherals industry that we know today,” said Min-Liang Tan, Co-Founder and CEO of Razer. “The Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is more than a mouse. It’s a tribute to the community who made this possible and a reaffirmation of our motto that continues to guide everything we do: For Gamers. By Gamers.”
