Immortal? That was Thor once, but with Asgard vanquished from the mortal realm, he’s taking on a new and more human guise.
*This article includes spoilers for the last issue of Immortal Thor*
Down to Earth
If you’ve been following along with what Marvel Comics has ben doing in Immortal Thor, it’s been roller coaster ride. Writer Al Ewing and a cadre of artistic talent, that includes Martín Cóccolo and Jan Bazaldua, closed the door on the longtime Avenger and Norse thunder god today, with the release of the final issue of Immortal Thor.
In that book SPOILERS Thor is murdered by Loki during a huge battle, and Asgard’s Rainbow Bridge is smashed, thus severing the link between the realm of the Norse gods and Midgard. But things aren’t quite so simple, as it appears that the broken connection has led to all memory of Asgard and its inhabitants being relegated back to mythological status with the whole of humanity.
But what does a man named Sigurd Jarlson waking up on Earth have to do with those cosmic happenings? Well, it seems that this particular construction worker has… a hammer.

THE LEGEND BEGINS!
The Norse Myths tell of Gods who walked the Earth, doing great deeds for the mortals who believed in them. But Asgard isn’t real, and never was. The Gods never soared in our skies, never stood with our heroes, never fought for kindness or justice. It was all just a story. Nobody’s coming to help us. But somewhere in the city… a man is waking up. A man with a hammer. This is the story of Sigurd Jarlson, the MORTAL THOR!
“Now that IMMORTAL THOR #25 is on the stands for you to read – and please do – we can be a little more open about the exact nature of the second act of the story,” Ewing explained. “This was an idea that sprang into being from the original pitch; I wanted to treat Thor as a God, and give him a truly mythological story… but as well as the son of Odin, he’s the son of Gaea. So we find ourselves in winter. Thor is dead, and Sigurd Jarlson walks the earth – without power, without fame, without memory. And yet the fate of Asgard and Midgard rests on this mortal man making the journey to return the magic of the Gods to the Earth. And to get there – to even learn the nature of the quest – he’s going to have to fight.”

Marvel Comics press release
Al Ewing and artist Pasqual Ferry open up the second leg of what’s becoming a Thor epic, when Mortal Thor #1 hits the racks this month, on July 14th. Fans will have to hold on for a month after that, as the book won’t have an August issue, but will instead continue in September (on the 24th) before rolling into what looks to be it’s usual monthly status thereafter.
