Marvel Comics has a monster milestone on the horizon, with Amazing Spider-Man #1000, and artist Lee Bermejo is getting things started.
Countdown to 1k
First published back in 1963, Amazing Spider-Man is pretty easily Marvel’s marquee title. Yeah, there’ve been times where the book has taken a backseat to others, including some additional Spidey books, but it’s one of the most recognizable comics in the medium, no matter what its numbering might be.
Speaking of, currently the book has been rebooted once again, but its low numbing belays a greater, Legacy Number that will soon put the series into a lofty group. There are only a few after all, that have hit issue #1000. For Amazing Spider-Man, it’ll be a little while before it gets to that mark (some time next year), but Marvel set to get the celebration rolling this fall.
A set of variant covers will begin then under the heading of the “Amazing Visions Variant Cover” series. The first three of those will hail from industry mainstay Lee Bermejo, whose work on Batman: Noel is still a favorite for many fans. And if you like what was done there, you’re going to want to check out what Bermejo has cooked up for the web-head.

“Even as a kid, I could never detach some sense of realism from the way I thought of Spider-Man,” Bermejo explained. “I always wanted to know how his web shooters worked and why you could never see the line where the mask attached to the costume while still totally being able to lose myself in the fantasy of a teenager bitten by a radioactive spider who would walk up walls and lift cars. My artistic vision has always been to interpret Spidey in a grounded way without losing the spectacle and sense of ‘amazing fantasy’. I’m beyond thrilled to be able to show readers important moments of his history through my lens leading up to the landmark issue #1000 of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, while still respecting the important legacy that so many creators I love contributed to through the years.”
“There are rare artists who can take something we’ve seen a million times and somehow make it seem revolutionary. Lee Bermejo is one of those artists,” says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe. “We’ve been looking for ways to celebrate the lead-up to AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1000, and having Lee Bermejo take on 25 of the most important moments in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN history seemed like a heck of a way to do so!”

Marvel Comics press release
Look for the first Amazing Visions Variant Cover (and accompanying Virgin Variant) to grace this September’s Amazing Spider-Man #11. That issue will hit the stands on September 3rd, followed by Amazing #12 on September 17th (yes, two in one month), and finally Amazing #13, which swings into stores on the 1st of October.
Though that’ll wrap up Bermejo’s work for the initiative, there’ll be a total of 25 Amazing Visions Variant Covers heading into next year’s Amazing Spider-Man #36, which is the book’s overall 1000th issue. So yeah, this is just the start for the wall-crawler’s big celebration.
