Dev diary #2 for Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40K introduces a world beyond the Imperium

The first massive RPG set in the Warhammer 40K universe, Owlcat Games’ Rogue Trader is going to take players to the dangerous Koronus Expanse.

Not that Expanse

Still very much in the midst of a video game boom is Warhammer 40K. The venerable tabletop franchise has been the subject of gaming for a long time, but there are a pile of titles playing off of it now.

Those mainly fall into the strategy genre, though there are a few very notable outliers. One of those seems to be the upcoming Rogue Trader. From the role-playing luminaries at Owlcat Games, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader will being players to a new part of the WH40K universe, and with the emphasis on story and exploration, over all-out warfare.

Not that there won’t be that too, as this second developer diary does hint at action. But the idea of exploring a larger, more untamed and more ancient part of the now pretty well-trod 40K U is intriguing.

Here’s a look:

Players will take on the role of a Rogue Trader, a scion of an ancient dynasty of daring privateers, that reign over their own merchant empire and explore the fringes of Imperial space  with the blessing of the Emperor Himself. Thanks to their Warrant of Trade – the Rogue Trader is endowed with privileges and power beyond imagination as well as the task of expanding the borders of the Imperium. At their disposal is a gargantuan voidship of immense strength and innumerable personnel ready to follow any undertakings of the leader. Show your subjects mercy or disdain, stay faithful to the Emperor or consort with enemies of Mankind – every decision and every act of the Rogue Trader sends ripples throughout entire star systems, changing the in-game world and those who inhabit it.

Owlcat Games press release

If you couldn’t tell, Rogue Trader will be a traditional cRPG. That’s kind of Owlcat Games’ brand a butter after all. And while you can definitely expect a new light to be shed on the 41st millennium, you’ll still find some of the usual inclusions, like Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, and others.

This one is looking very promising, even here in the early going. There’s no release date just yet for this one, but keep watching. We’ll have much more on Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader soon.
