So when can we put down some grooves on the Keytar?

Harmonix and EA have, by way of an unrelated press release on Rockband 2 New Order DLC, confirmed the North American release date of Rockband 3. The Game is confirmed for release in the US on October 26 for PS3, 360, Wii and DS.

Several US companies are offering up tasty pre-order bonuses. Wal-Mart will give you a $10 e-card for PS3, 360 and Wii pre-orders. Amazon are coming in with an in-game guitar for PS3, 360 and Wii as well as a voucher for $10 off future purchases for PS3 and Xbox 360 pre-orders.

The game has not been dated for EU or the rest of the world BUT EA and Harmonix mentioned recently that Rockband 3, unlike Rockband 1 or 2, would ship day and date across all major territories. If we get a solid confirmation we will let you know – promise!

[UPDATE]

EA and Harmonix have confirmed the release date for the UK/EU of 29th October 2010. Not quite day & date but darn close!

On the most recent episode of our podcast, Barry commented on Nintendo having pretty much brought back all of their major characters and franchises, and the disappointing general lack of new IP at E3. It would seem as though some within Nintendo feel that there needs to be change, to.

According to a report in the Japanese Sankei Newspaper, at a recent shareholder’s meeting, Shigeru Miyamoto, when asked about a new game, said “We need new game characters soon, maybe we can move forward on that next year.” Should be interesting to see what new tricks Nintendo could have up their sleeves.

Interestingly, in the same meeting, a question was raised when discussing Apple’s products. When asked if Nintendo had considered making software for the iPad and iPhone, CEO Satoru Iwata replied Nintendo’s software and hardware are the same thing. “Other companies don’t share Nintendo’s values or traditions when it comes to creating devices. We are absolutely not thinking of doing that.” Interesting comments indeed.

Since the Nintendo 3DS was announced and subsequently unveiled at E3, there hasn’t been any announcements, or even real speculation, as to the price of the unit.

However, a listing has popped up for the 3DS over on Dutch site Bartsmit.com which has the 3DS listed for a March 2011 release date, for the quite reasonable price of €169.95. This is roughly equivalent to around £140, which would quite frankly be a fantastic price for the machine.

Nintendo have yet to officially announce a price, so we’ll have to wait and see if this is what the retail price will actually be.

Source: CVG

[UPDATE]
Bart Smit today told Eurogamer that the price and release date they posted for the 3DS were purely speculative, and they don’t actually know what the retail price is. Nintendo themselves have confirmed that they have not decided on a date or price yet, but that it should be out by the end of March 2011.

I blame Canada.

Welcome back to Brutal Gamer’s preview of the month ahead. July is traditionally one of the quietest months of the year, though this year sees some pretty big releases arriving in the height of summer. It’s been quite some time since a PC game has been the biggest release of the month, but then again, Starcraft 2 isn’t just any old title. The original game is a national sport in Korea, complete with professional players and illegal match fixing. The first part of the new Starcraft focuses on the Terrans in the single player, though all races are available day one in the multiplayer. The game will go against the recent trend of streamlining game mechanics and base building, something both Dawn of War II and Command & Conquer 4 both tried, with varying levels of success. Instead, players will have to hotkey their way out of trouble whilst building their strategies around efficient resource and tech tree management. I wouldn’t be surprised to see South Korea having a national holiday when this arrives on the 27 of July.

Chess in Space

If PC is your platform of choice, but you don’t feel up to space chess, then perhaps APB will tickle your fancy. Created by Realtime Worlds, the company behind the original Crackdown, this gangland style take on the MMO genre is making itself stand out in a number of ways, not least in the depth of the customisation tools, which rival similar toolsets found in bar setters such as Forza 3. Players will be able to completely edit the look of their avatar, as well as create gang symbols and signature decals for cars. There will also be a wide range of clothing and tattoo styles as well as a customisable jingle that will be played at certain points, for example when another player dies by your hand, they will hear your gang tune as they curse your gangs name. Expect to hear the beginning of the Mario theme tune pop up more than a few times… If gangs aren’t for you, APB also offers players the chance to play on the side of the police, hopefully setting up some Heat inspired scenarios which will somehow involve DeNiro and Pacino having a cup of coffee… well we can dream. The game will also allowed players to pay in terms of game hours rather than calendar days, which is an innovation that hopefully catch on with other MMO’s. We’ll find out after the games release July 2nd .

You what what they say about guys with big guns... tired arms

Making a joke about Starcraft inspired holidays may seem a bit of a stretch, that is until you consider the impact a new Dragon Quest title can have on the work efficiency of Japan. Dragon Quest IX arrives on these shores on the 23rd of July for the DS and will likely keep fans of the series questing for dragons for months to come. It sold more than a few copies in Japan and, while it doesn’t have the same cult following here, it’s likely to see healthy sales figures here as well.

The same paragraph could be repeated almost verbatim (though with toned down sales) for Persona III Portable. The game that has you put a gun shaped object to your teenage characters head as a method of summoning, gets a PSP port this month so expect glasses to make a fashion comeback on the 9th of July. If you didn’t get that last joke, don’t worry, it wasn’t very funny to begin with, though those that have played the PS2 original will know exactly what I mean.

The big sports title of the month is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, which places a special emphasis on the Ryder Cup and has Irish golfer Rory McIlroy sharing cover space with him so I’m already calling this out as the best in the series. True Aim mode will see your golfer get closer to the… action (in golf?) than ever before. Last year’s iteration was the first game to use the motion plus add on for the Wii and perhaps it will give it the edge over its HD cousins. All will be revealed when the game ships next Friday, July 2nd.

Holy Shit! Golf!

So it seems that even in the middle of summer, it’s a good time to be playing games. As always, stay close to Brutal Gamer for reviews of the biggest games as they arrive on shelves. And go get some sun, it won’t be around forever.

So the weekend is here and like most people you probably have 2 questions.

Question one: What I am going to do this weekend?

Answer: You are going to download and play Photo Dojo for your DSi.

Question two: What is Photo Dojo?

Answer:

Photo Dojo is a DSiWare game that you can download for 200 points. It’s a 2D side scrolling fighting game where you fight off waves of enemy’s. Nothing exceptional here.

The fun part of Photo Dojo is that you take pictures of yourself in various poses and even record your own sound effects. Throw in a custom fireball and background and you are ready to go. Have a friend do the same and go head-to-head or just fight off waves and waves of your own created enemies and you have yourself a few hours of fun.

I know what you are thinking. “Spoon, I did not know what the answer to the first question was until I asked. So, how could you possible know what I was going to ask next?”

Sorry, you are only allowed two questions for the weekend. Enjoy.

I’ll tell you something, Nintendo aren’t fucking around with this.

So, Nintendo’s E3 press conference is in the bag, and by all accounts it was a big one for hardcore games (No, you didn’t misread that) and Nintendo, having officially unveiled the 3DS, have released a list of games currently being worked on.

The 3DS itself will contain a camera, just like the DSi. This camera will have 2 lenses, however, allowing 3D photos to be taken, as well as motion and gyro sensors. As already announced, the 3D gaming aspect will work without glasses, and will have a depth slider so players can choose the level of 3D, or switch it off completely if they wish. As if this wasn’t enough, you will be able to download 3D movies as well. All in all, this is quite a serious piece of kit.

There are some big names on the list of games in progress, including The Sims 3, Assassin’s Creed: Lost Legacy, Metal Gear Solid and Ninja Gaiden, with Nintendo themselves announcing new versions of Starfox, PilotWings and Kid Icarus. The full list, via Kotaku, looks like this: -

Showin’ how funky and strong is your fight~

Ubisoft has announced a Michael Jackson game that will allow players to emulate MJ during his most popular performances and learn to dance (and possibly sing) like him. The game was announced at the end of Ubisoft’s E3 2010 presentation and featured dancers from the Michael Jackson documentary This is It with no actual gameplay. CEO Yves Guillemot informed the audience: “[When you] see the guys [that] will be performing on the show what will be important for you to consider is … you will be able to learn how to do those moves.”

If you’ve seen the demo videos of Dance Central it seems like a few of Michael Jackson’s signature moves could plausibly emulated with the Kinect peripheral. If you watch his performance on Motown’s 25th Anniversary I predict we may see the toe stand, the moonwalk (obviously), the spin, the inspirational reach, and his perpetual jive where he slides his ankles in and out while arching his legs. I suspect we won’t emulate his signature hip thrust though, nor his signature kick. Demo videos of the other Kinect title, Dance Masters, imply poses may be involved in the gameplay as well.

It’s a clever evolution of performance gaming because it harnesses Michael Jackson’s international appeal. Many of the professional dancers in This is It cite MJ as their inspiration to become dancers. I don’t agree with Guillemot’s statement that that players could “learn how to be as good as those guys or even better,” but it doesn’t mean I won’t try.

The game will be available for Xbox 360 (Kinect), PlayStation 3 (utilizing Move), PSP, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS at the end of this year.
