Half-Life 3 Unlikely to Ever Happen

Sadly, Half-Life 3 seems to never be coming out.

Half-Life 3 has become memetic among the gaming community. Being an awaited continuation of a beloved gaming franchise. However, recent evidence has been brought to light that it will never be made. Andrew Reiner of GameInformer has published an article regarding an interview he had with a Valve employee. Something that needs to be stressed is that this interview was originally held in 2015. Reiner held off on writing about it due to being unable to get a second source to confirm it. On top of that, Reiner’s source has chosen to remain unnamed. Everything here should be taken with a grain of salt.

The interview is very extensive and can be read in full here, but there are a few major take aways. The most important was that Half-Life 3 was never actually a thing. Some teams had tried to get it off the ground, but they eventually hit a wall or were stopped. Resources and attention were being pulled away and towards other games. Secondly, Valve doesn’t want to “deliver something like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” by delivering a disappointing sequel. Something made worst by the high expectations for Half-Life 3. Finally, Reiner’s anonymous source gave a reason why Valve no longer talks about Half-Life 3. “Every time they talk about it, the hunger comes back. That’s why they ignore it. The pain subsides with time.”

To be perfectly frank, if this is true, it probably isn’t going to come as a surprise to many people. Episode 2 was released back in 2007, making it nearly a decade old at this point. Despite all the jokes about “Half-Life 3 confirmed” so many gamers no doubt knew the reality of the situation. That being said, it’s rather disheartening to hear potential reasons why the game isn’t happening. Valve isn’t going to make it because they don’t want to tarnish memories of the franchise. I was never even a big Half-Life fan and I find this unbelievably depressing. I hate to say it, but I think we need to lay Gordon Freeman to rest. Once and for all.
