Xbox One sales surge in quarter 4, 2014

Microsoft has revealed that sales of the Xbox One console have jumped up quite a bit, year over year, and that’s just part of the mostly good news for the company.

For starters, it looks like the Xbox One did quite well in the Holiday season last year, selling 1.4 million consoles. That’s an increase of 300k units as compared to the previous year (2013), and a decent jump, so there shouldn’t be any fears among fans that the console would be coming to an early end thanks to Sony’s tremendous lead in what’s really a two console race (sorry Nintendo).

It shouldn’t be terribly surprising to anyone either since we already knew that, even though the PS4 leads the market, the Xbox One outsold Sony’s console this past Holiday. The biggest factor there (as pointed out by MCV) being the lower price point for the Xbox One hardware itself, which has resulted in higher sales and more money made for Microsoft.

Going a little deeper, overall sales climbed for the brand, and were up some 44%  on the back of increased Xbox Live sales. And the report also states that the company’s Surface line of touchscreen tablets has risen in sales with the advent of Surface 3, and are doing well too.

In fact, the only down note for MS has been its purchase of Nokia, and I don’t think there are too many people who couldn’t have seen that one coming. The mobile phone maker, absorbed by Microsoft fairly recently, has dragged the tech giant down quite a bit to the tune of $1.3 billion USD with the crash of mobile handset sales.

While that’s no small number, don’t feel too bad for the Washington-based company, as they have racked up $22.2 billion overall in the last year. So you know, I think they’ll be fine.
