NPD: US Video Game Sales Fell 29% In June, 3DS Breaks 5m Units Sold In US

According to the NPD Group’s retail sales report, total new retail sales of video game spending fell 29% year-over-year in June to just $699.8 million. Sales were down in all categories for the month, except for sales of video game accessories which saw a 4% increase.

Total hardware sales saw the biggest decline with the category experiencing a 45% drop over June 2011. The Xbox 360 topped the hardware charts with 257K in sales (a decline of 49% over last year) followed by the Nintendo 3DS with 155K units sold (up 8%), making it the only hardware system to see a year-over-year sales increase. Making that small bump in 3DS sales even more impressive is that it was enough to push total US sales past 5 million units, 25% more than the DS had at the same point in its life cycle. Sales data for the Vita was not specifically released, but total sales of the PSP and Vita combined were estimated to be around 100K units.

Overall new retail software sales (including PC) were down 27% to $362.8 million. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes lead the top 10 chart with 450K copies sold across the Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, NDS, 3DS, PSV, and PC. Warner Bros. other Batman title, Batman: Arkham City, landed in sixth place, and Lollipop Chainsaw debuted outside the top 10 with 107K in sales.
